Project background

The terminal was expanded while remaining fully operational, so the seating in the departure areas had to be replaced and increased without disrupting flight handling.

Requirements and challenges

  • Night works only: passengers had to keep using the lounges by day, leaving a four-hour window per shift
  • Public durability: airport seating faces heavy footfall, luggage impact and frequent chemical cleaning, so it must resist both
  • Accessibility and identification: accessible waiting zones and luggage-trolley bays were required, and seats needed numbering for wayfinding

Specification and solution

  • 1,860 beam-mounted waiting seats: perforated powder-coated steel seat pans on a rigid beam, with armrests and cup holders
  • Reinforced armrest supports in the accessible zones, with space reserved at row ends for luggage trolleys
  • Seat numbering aligned with the terminal's wayfinding system for passengers and ground staff

Delivery and outcome

  • All units passed public-area load and chemical-resistance testing
  • After reopening, seat capacity in the 14 gate lounges increased by roughly 18% against the original scheme

Client feedback: airport operations noted that the night delivery was well paced, the seating recovers quickly after cleaning, and numbering integrates smoothly with signage.
