Background
The project is located at a tropical beach resort in Phuket, Thailand, where rows of leaning palm trees line the edge of a white-sand beach and the sea is calm. In 2020, the resort began upgrading its outdoor lounge areas and required hammocks to be installed between palm trunks for guests to lie in while facing the sea. A total of 6 hammock installation points were planned, all fully exposed to the elements.
Requirements and challenges
- Resistance to high humidity and salt corrosion: Phuket's coastal air has high salt content and year-round elevated humidity. Fabric and wooden components must withstand prolonged exposure without rapid mould growth or rusting of hardware.
- No damage to living palm trunks: Hammocks must be secured to live palm trees using a method that avoids cutting into bark or affecting tree growth. Nails or metal clamps driven directly into the trunks are not permitted.
- Visual consistency with the landscape: The resort required products with a natural, understated appearance, with colours that coordinate with white sand and palm trunks. Highly reflective metal parts or overly bright fabrics are not acceptable.
Specification and solution
- Wooden spreader bar fabric hammocks selected: We supplied 2 models from our standard catalogue, both with solid wood spreader bars and high-density outdoor canvas beds. A total of 12 hammocks were configured, 6 of each model.
- Soft rope-loop fixing method: Wide nylon flat webbing was wrapped around each trunk and tied to suspend the hammock. Webbing width is no less than 5 cm, distributing pressure to avoid point-loading damage to the bark.
- Dark-toned fabric finish: The canvas beds were supplied in dark grey and dark brown, blending with palm trunk shadows and the beach environment. Darker fabric also resists visible soiling better than light-coloured alternatives, reducing the frequency of removal for cleaning.
Delivery and outcome
- All 12 hammocks installed: 6 installation points with 2 hammocks each, distributed along an approximately 80-metre stretch of the palm line at the beachfront.
- Delivery and installation: From drawing confirmation through sea freight to Phuket, on-site tying and installation were completed.
- Simulated load test passed: Each hammock was tested under a 150 kg static load for 24 hours of continuous stress. Wooden spreader bars showed no cracking and knots showed no significant slippage.
Client feedback: Guest usage of the hammocks has been high since installation. They remain stable in strong sea breezes. After several months of use, no mould has appeared on the fabric and the trees show no signs of damage.
