Background
A garden and outdoor supplies warehouse operator in Bogota expanded its wholesale business in 2012. The facility included high-bay shelving and a separate dispatch and sorting area, requiring a standardised display system and efficient outbound flow for the pressure sprayer category. We assisted with product configuration and on-site layout support for this category.
Requirements and challenges
- Clear size differentiation: Wholesale customers select products directly at the shelving, so different capacity models had to be distinguishable at a glance to prevent picking errors that would affect subsequent orders.
- Fast turnover in the dispatch area: Sprayers are medium-volume items prone to toppling when stacked poorly. The dispatch area needed rapid replenishment by pallet position and efficient break-bulk dispatch.
- Warehouse environment tolerance: The Bogota warehouse is semi-open, with shelving areas exposed to sunlight and dust. Product surfaces and seals had to withstand non-climate-controlled storage.
Specification and solution
- 3 pressure sprayer models: Covering handheld, backpack and large-capacity formats, arranged top to bottom on shelving from smallest to largest capacity, allowing wholesalers to pick by requirement.
- Direct pallet display: The dispatch area used original pallets without secondary unpacking, reducing handling steps. Sprayer handles faced outward in a uniform direction for faster inspection and counting.
- Weather-resistant seal materials: To address temperature swings and dust in the semi-open warehouse, ageing-resistant seals and thicker bottle bodies were specified to reduce leakage risk from non-climate-controlled storage.
Delivery and outcome
- 3 models, 72 cartons in total were delivered in batches to the shelving and dispatch areas. Shelving display and pallet position labelling in the dispatch area were completed in parallel.
- Dispatch picking route time reduced by approximately 30%. With direct pallet placement, average picking time per wholesale order dropped from 12 minutes to around 8 minutes.
- Toppling incidents decreased markedly. After uniform orientation and layered placement, no sprayer damage from improper stacking occurred in the dispatch area during the first month of trial operation.
Client feedback: The size separation is clear. Wholesale customers can select from the shelving on their own, and handling in the dispatch area is smoother. Much less hassle than the previous mixed storage.
