О проекте
Background
The project is located at a private kindergarten in Auckland, New Zealand, where classrooms feature extensive natural light, natural timber interiors and direct access to outdoor activity areas. Ahead of the 2016 school year, the kindergarten required children desks and chairs for 4 group activity zones. Furniture height and tone needed to coordinate with the existing timber finishes, and the layout had to support daily group teaching and transitions between free-play activities.
Requirements and challenges
- Height matched to young children's seated posture Desk and chair heights needed to correspond to the average stature of children aged 3-5, with the height difference between seat and tabletop kept within an appropriate range to prevent feet hanging unsupported.
- Natural wood tone integrated with the interior The classroom already contained natural timber wall cabinets and flooring. The wood grain tone of the furniture needed to be close in appearance, with no noticeable colour discrepancy or reflective surfaces.
- Structural stability under grouped layouts Desks and chairs would be moved and reconfigured frequently, but the floor was timber. Bases needed to be slip-resistant and non-marking, and repeated pushing or pulling could not cause loosening or noise.
Specification and solution
- Selected low-height natural wood desks and chairs in a base configuration From the 10 children desk and chair models in the current range, a low desk and low chair combination suited to ages 3-5 was selected, with a tabletop height not exceeding 480mm.
- Anti-slip soft pads fitted to table and chair legs All contact points with the timber floor were fitted with anti-slip pads to reduce movement noise and lower the risk of floor scratching.
- Configured for 4 activity clusters Each cluster was set with one table and four chairs. Spacing between desks and chairs followed child passage widths, and orientation was adjusted separately for window-side and wall-side areas.
Delivery and outcome
- 4 activity zone desk and chair sets delivered on schedule A total of 4 low desks and 16 children's chairs were placed on site.
- Colour discrepancy kept within an acceptable range The natural wood desks and chairs showed no noticeable colour shift when viewed alongside the classroom's timber finishes, and the kindergarten passed acceptance on the first inspection.
- No loosening reported after two weeks of use The anti-slip pads effectively suppressed push-pull noise, desk and chair connectors showed no loosening, and daily group activities required no secondary tightening.
Client feedback: The children's feet rest firmly on the floor when seated, the chairs move quietly, and the wood colour matches the classroom's original timber well.
