Background
An esports venue operator in Shenzhen opened a modern arena in 2017, featuring tiered player stations and extensive RGB accent lighting. The operator needed to complete furniture installation for the competition area before opening, with chairs and desks required to maintain visual consistency under low-light conditions, provide structural stability, and withstand frequent continuous use.
Requirements and challenges
- Seat flame retardancy and abrasion resistance: As a high-occupancy venue, the operator required seat upholstery to be flame-retardant treated, with armrests and seat bolsters resistant to daily scuffing. Standard office chair specifications were not acceptable.
- Desktop structure and cable management: Competition desktops needed to accommodate monitor arms, keyboard and mouse cabling, and desktop microphone booms simultaneously. Cutout positions had to be accurate, with no exposed wiring underneath.
- Visual coordination in low-light conditions: The venue operates under dim primary lighting. The black and red furniture needed to work with the RGB light strips without producing large reflective surfaces or washed-out colour.
Specification and solution
- Black and red racing-style gaming chairs with steel bases: Selected black and red racing-style chair models with thickened moulded foam in the seat and backrest bolsters. The mechanism sits on a steel five-star base to prevent deformation under repeated reclining.
- Steel-wood construction gaming desks with rear cable trays: Desktops use high-density board with a black wear-resistant finish. Frames are welded steel square tube. The rear edge of each desktop includes a cable tray and two 60mm grommet holes.
- Custom desktop depth and backrest angle matching: Based on the tiered platform step heights provided by the operator, desktop depth was set uniformly at 700mm. Chair gas lift travel was limited to a 90mm to 120mm range to keep seated eye level aligned with the screen.
Delivery and outcome
- 24 sets passed inspection on first check: Delivered 24 desk and chair sets in total. Three chairs were randomly selected for backrest fatigue testing, with reclining mechanisms completing 20,000 cycles without loosening.
- Desktop load testing met specification: Two desktops were randomly selected for static load testing. A single-point load of 60kg was applied for one hour with no visible deformation of the tabletop and no movement of the cable tray fixings.
Client feedback: After more than a year of heavy use, the chairs show no signs of edge collapse, and the desktop grommet positions are accurate — cabling no longer needs to be tied down with zip ties.
