프로젝트 개요

Background

The site is a paved plaza in Melbourne, surrounded by commercial blocks converted from red-brick warehouses. The operator runs an open-air market every Saturday and Sunday. Stall positions are fixed, but the structures must be dismantled and reinstalled each weekend. In early 2020 the operator began upgrading stall infrastructure across two rows of street-facing units, requiring a uniform appearance and compatibility with the existing paved surface.

Requirements and challenges

  • No ground penetration permitted: The plaza paving falls under municipal management. Ground spikes and chemical anchors are prohibited. All fixing had to rely on removable ballast.
  • High assembly frequency: The market operates two days per week. Tents must be erected by Friday afternoon and taken down on Sunday evening, with a two-person assembly time target of under 20 minutes per unit.
  • Wind load management: The brick warehouses on both sides create a wind corridor. Afternoon gusts are noticeable, and the structures needed to be considered as temporary works with lateral stability addressed.
  • Internal display loading: Shelving and counters are placed inside each stall. The canopy frame must not deform under suspended or leaning loads.

Specification and solution

  • Standard pop-up canopy selected: We supplied our standard quick-assembly pop-up canopy, a four-leg structure with four water-fillable ballast bases, each weighing approximately 22 kg when filled.
  • Uniform spacing: Units were arranged along two main walkways at a 3-metre frontage. Column bases were aligned with the paving joint direction to reduce reliance on slab flatness.
  • Built-in display modules: Each tent was fitted with one folding trestle table and a two-tier mesh shelf. The table was verified for a uniformly distributed load of 40 kg, with no load transferred to the columns.

Delivery and outcome

  • Quantity delivered: 12 pop-up canopy tents in total, arranged in two rows of six corresponding to the two main walkways.
  • Assembly efficiency: The operator's two-person teams recorded an average assembly time of 17 minutes and dismantling time of 9 minutes per unit, meeting the weekend operating schedule.
  • Stability testing: With ballast fully filled, the canopies passed a sustained single-side test equivalent to Force 7 gusts, with no column base slippage observed.

Client feedback: The ballast bases sit securely on the paved surface, and weekend setup and takedown now takes roughly half the time it used to.
