Background
An event equipment rental warehouse in Johannesburg, South Africa, organises daily turnover around high racking and clear through-aisles. After expanding its banquet chair inventory in 2019, the client needed a unified chair cover specification so that chairs could be placed on trolleys in a pre-dressed state, reducing assembly and disassembly work while remaining compatible with high-rack storage and retrieval.
Requirements and challenges
- Quick identification in high-rack storage: Once fitted, chair covers had to be identifiable by batch from high-rack positions, requiring consistent appearance with no visible colour deviation or dimensional variation.
- Long-term storage in pre-dressed state: Banquet chair covers needed to remain on chairs during trolley storage, requiring crease-resistant fabric that would not loosen after repeated loading and unloading.
- One specification for the entire warehouse: The client purchased a single universal cover model only, which had to fit the majority of existing armless banquet chairs, with sufficient pattern allowance but no dragging on the floor.
Specification and solution
- Universal banquet chair cover from current catalogue: A single four-way stretch fabric with a concealed rear zip, sized to fit standard armless banquet chair back heights and seat depths.
- Quantity matched to trolley capacity: Total cover quantities were calculated against the number of chairs per trolley in the client's fleet, with no mixed sizes and no split packaging, allowing immediate allocation by trolley upon arrival.
- Packaging designed for high-rack handling: Each bag contained a fixed quantity, with batch number and count marked on the outer bag for whole-bag racking and order picking from high-rack positions.
Delivery and outcome
- Quantity delivered: Full allocation against the client's existing banquet chair trolley fleet; the total number of covers matched the total number of chair positions on trolleys, with no excess spare stock.
- Trial fitting results: The client spot-checked 3 trolleys totalling 72 banquet chairs; all chairs were dressed in a single pass, with no interference between the bottom anti-slip strip and the chair legs.
Client feedback: Once fitted, the covers require no further adjustment. They can be pulled out and used immediately, and they are easy to identify on the high racks.
