프로젝트 개요

Background

A private boarding school in Dongguan carried out a furniture upgrade for its boys' dormitory building during the 2022 summer break. The rooms have tiled floors and large windows, with regular dimensions. The original wooden bed frames had developed looseness and creaking. The school planned to complete the full replacement before the autumn term began, covering 72 rooms across three floors.

Requirements and challenges

  • Clear load-bearing and stability requirements: Both upper and lower bunks needed to withstand the dynamic loads of daily turning and climbing. The bed frames were not to show visible movement, and fasteners were not permitted to work loose during use.
  • Floor and wall constraints: The dormitories have hard tiled floors, so the bed feet required anti-slip protection to prevent scratching the tiles. The side facing the wall could not cause wall abrasion.
  • Compressed installation window: The school required removal of old beds, installation of new ones and on-site cleanup to be completed within the summer closure period, without affecting the start of the academic year.

Specification and solution

  • Selected the standard straight-ladder steel bunk bed from three current models: The frame is formed from cold-rolled steel plate, with longitudinal steel slats for the bed base to ensure ventilation and even support.
  • Bolted connections throughout, no on-site welding: All post and rail joints are secured with lock nuts, allowing the beds to be moved through dormitory doorways and facilitating future disassembly and maintenance.
  • Anti-slip rubber pads on bed feet, textured treads on ladder rungs: Addressed separately for tiled floors and climbing safety, reducing the risk of displacement and slipping.

Delivery and outcome

  • 216 bunk beds delivered and installed: Covering 72 rooms at 3 beds per room, phased in by floor without disrupting other areas.
  • Sampled static load testing passed 600 kg: Each bed met the static load standard of 300 kg per bunk in spot checks, with no structural deformation or loosened connections found.
  • Zero loosening-related repair calls within 30 days of handover: During the first month of the term, no reports were received of creaking, loose fasteners or detached anti-slip pads.

Client feedback: When the dormitory supervisor pushed the headboard during a spot check, the bed did not move at all. Students have not reported creaking either. This batch of beds has been trouble-free for us.
