Background

This is a large church auditorium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, finished predominantly in warm wood tones with a raised central platform. During a 2021 renovation, all fixed row seating was due for replacement, with a total capacity of approximately 800. The client required seating that would sit comfortably within the wooden interior while standing up to the demands of frequent worship services.

Requirements and challenges

• Warm wood-grain consistency: the auditorium's walls and flooring are warm-toned timber, so all exposed seat parts required a matching wood-grain transfer finish, with colour variation kept within a narrow tolerance.
• Long-row structural integrity: each row runs continuously for more than 20 chairs, so the frames needed sufficient lateral torsional resistance to prevent leaning or rattling in use.
• Upholstery durability under heavy use: with services and events held frequently, seat cushions required high-density rebound foam and abrasion-resistant fabric to avoid premature sagging or pilling.

Specification and solution

• Selected the standard church chair with custom colour from a range of 12 in-stock models: the armrests and backrest outer frames received a warm wood-grain transfer finish over the standard steel-and-wood structure to match the site palette.
• Upholstery used high-resilience PU foam with dark brown wear-resistant fabric: the fabric meets standard commercial abrasion and colourfastness ratings, while reducing visual contrast against the timber surroundings.
• Frames fitted with lateral connectors: each row is secured via concealed beams and floor anchors, keeping long runs aligned and stable without visible fixings.

Delivery and outcome

• Delivered 520 upholstered church chairs in total, arranged in 26 rows of 20, all facing the raised platform.
• 32 chairs were inspected after installation: cushion rebound, structural stability and wood-grain colour variation all passed first time.

Client feedback: the chairs sit naturally against the existing timber walls; after several months of use there has been no loosening or sagging, and congregants report the seating is noticeably more comfortable than the previous chairs.
