Background

This is a contemporary hotel in Mexico City, where the lobby features stone floors, tall planting and warm lighting. In early 2019, the owner initiated a furniture refresh for the public areas, starting with the lobby lounge. The requirement was for a group of low upholstered sofas and armchairs arranged around coffee tables, matched to the scale and circulation of the space.

Requirements and challenges

Fabric durability and stain resistance: The lobby sees heavy foot traffic and strong reflection from the stone floor. The fabric needed to resist UV exposure and liquid penetration without showing wear prematurely.
Low profile and structural stability: The low seat height placed higher demands on the internal frame and foot pad load distribution. Sagging or lateral tilting under use was not acceptable.
Sea freight packaging and delivery window: The order had to ship from China to Mexico City. Packaging needed to withstand humidity during ocean transit and handling impacts, and the delivery window was three weeks.

Specification and solution

Low upholstered sofas with metal internal frame: We selected the low-profile model from our standard range, built on a steel-and-wood hybrid frame with high-resilience foam seat cushions to maintain support over extended use.
Custom blended fabric: A stain-treated blended fabric was used, with colour fastness rated to commercial standards. Warm grey and dark brown were chosen to sit quietly against the lobby's warm lighting.
Modular layout: A total of 26 pieces—two-seat sofas and single armchairs—were configured around three coffee table clusters, with aisle widths kept clear for circulation.

Delivery and outcome

26 pieces were produced in September 2019 and arrived in Mexico City in mid-October, with zero shipping damage.
All knock-down components were positioned by number, with no disruption to hotel operations.
Seating spot checks: 6 pieces were tested. Cushion rebound met expectations across all samples, with no sagging or abnormal noise after 48 hours of continuous use.

Client feedback: The sofa dimensions and colours hold the lobby floor well. Guests do not sink too deeply when seated, and upkeep has been easier than expected.
