Background

A seafront public park promenade in Xiamen began upgrading its public seating facilities in 2021. The promenade is lined with palm planting and faces the water directly. Daily footfall is high, and the existing outdoor seating had deteriorated visibly from salt spray and sun exposure. The park authority required the replacement work to be completed before the peak tourist season, with no disruption to visitor access.

Requirements and challenges

High salt-spray resistance: The promenade sits close to the shoreline, where airborne salt levels are elevated. Standard iron or wood-plastic composite furniture typically shows coating blistering and hardware corrosion within two years.
Uniform grey finish: The authority required all furniture to match the grey tone of the promenade paving and railings, with no visible batch-to-batch colour variation.
Restricted fixing conditions: Some installation points were on permeable brick paving or at the edge of planted areas, ruling out large concrete foundations. The products needed to be structurally stable and straightforward to anchor.

Specification and solution

Three existing public outdoor furniture lines selected: Two-seat benches, single lounge chairs and round table-and-chair sets, all with weather-resistant metal frames and a grey coating, matched in colour.
Hardware and structural reinforcement: All fasteners were 304 stainless steel. Nylon washers were fitted between seat panels and frame connections to prevent galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metal contact.
Ground adaptation: On permeable brick areas, base plates were fixed with expansion bolts. At planted-area edges, extended ground spikes were used for direct anchoring, leaving the original paving intact.

Delivery and outcome

46 pieces delivered: 28 two-seat benches, 12 single lounge chairs and 6 round table-and-chair sets, all installed according to the site plan.
Salt-spray test passed: Coatings withstood 240 hours of neutral salt-spray testing with no blistering or rust, and hardware showed no white rust.

Client feedback: The furniture suits the seafront walkway well. The grey finish has held up over several months with no rust or fading, and visitors are sitting down to rest noticeably more often.
