Présentation du projet

Background

A private university in Seoul refurbished a lecture theatre in one of its core teaching buildings in 2022. The room uses a tiered seating layout with a full-width projection wall at the front and required a complete seating replacement. The project covered the main lecture hall on one floor, with seats arranged in curved, tiered rows, placing high demands on dimensional accuracy and installation positioning.

Requirements and challenges

  • Sightlines and spacing control in a tiered layout: Each row has a fixed platform height difference. Once installed, the seating could not obstruct views from rows behind, while sufficient elbow room in the writing position had to be maintained.
  • Frequent folding and unfolding of writing tablets: In a teaching environment the tablets are folded up and down multiple times daily. The hinge and limit-stop structure had to withstand high-frequency use without loosening or developing rebound noise.
  • Aisle clearance and fire safety compliance: With the tiered layout fixed, row spacing had to satisfy South Korean fire evacuation requirements and furniture installation tolerances at the same time.

Specification and solution

  • Selected one mid-back model with writing tablet from a range of 124 in-stock models: The chair frame is oval steel tube construction, with a PP injection-moulded tablet panel featuring an anti-slip textured surface that sits flush with the armrest when folded.
  • Fold mechanism uses a cast aluminium double-ear hinge with limit pin: The opening angle is fixed. Load testing after deployment was carried out at twice the downward pressure of normal writing to prevent sagging over long-term use.
  • Seat and backrest recline angle fine-tuned to tiered sightlines: Based on platform height differences and row spacing data from the site, we provided angle parameters for the university's review before locking production.

Delivery and outcome

  • Quantity: 216 seats installed in total.
  • Fold-cycle durability test: Random sample writing tablets were opened and closed 5,000 times consecutively, with no measurable play in the hinges and no displacement of the limit pins.
  • Sightline acceptance: After installation, seated sightline checks were carried out row by row. Students in the back row could see the full lower edge of the projection wall in a seated position, with no obstruction.

Client feedback: The chairs look straightforward, but after installation every row's sightline was exactly right. The writing tablets fold up steady, and students have used them for half a semester without any issues.
