Resumen del proyecto

Background

A general hospital in Lagos carried out a supporting upgrade of its inpatient wards. The ward walls are light-toned, with medical equipment rails and trunking installed, and lighting is high-output functional fixtures. The hospital planned to place a run of lockable storage cabinets along the main ward wall for patients' personal belongings and nursing consumables. Procurement and delivery were completed in 2022.

Requirements and challenges

  • Clear lock management requirements: Each cabinet needed independent locking, with keys assigned by bed number to prevent mix-ups of patient belongings or loss of nursing consumables.
  • Cabinets needed to suit the medical environment: Surfaces had to withstand daily wiping with disinfectants, edges had to be free of sharp corners, and bases had to be raised off the floor for cleaning access.
  • Dimensions constrained by ward layout: Cabinet depth could not impede bed movement or staff passage, and height had to clear wall-mounted medical rail connection points.

Specification and solution

  • Standard steel cabinet combinations selected: From five in-stock cabinet models, single-door, two-door and three-door configurations were chosen to match different bed-zone spaces.
  • All-steel construction with powder coating: Cabinets use cold-rolled steel sheet with electrostatic powder-coated surfaces, offering moisture and corrosion resistance suited to Lagos's coastal climate.
  • Uniform light grey finish: The colour coordinates with the ward's pale wall surfaces. Doors have ventilation slots, and interiors are fitted with adjustable shelves for both airflow and compartmentalised storage.

Delivery and outcome

  • Delivered quantity: 12 groups: Covering one side of the main ward wall, with individual group widths from 400 mm to 900 mm, arranged according to bed spacing.
  • Installation period: 4 days: On-site assembly, levelling, lock testing and wall fixing were completed without disrupting normal ward admissions.
  • Lock testing: 100% pass rate: All door opening, closing and locking were checked group by group. Across 12 groups and 72 doors, there was no sticking, no abnormal noise and no looseness.

Client feedback: The ward looks much tidier with the cabinets installed. Matching locks and keys to bed numbers has made management easier, and the nursing station has not reported any further mix-ups of stored items.
