Project overview
Background
The project is located at a hotel laundry and linen processing facility in Singapore, equipped with stainless steel sorting tables, trolleys and high-intensity lighting. In early 2018, the facility sought to improve room linen turnaround efficiency and required a batch of cushion covers capable of withstanding high-frequency washing and enabling rapid sorting by size and colour, for use with existing trolleys and processing workflows.
Requirements and challenges
- High-frequency industrial washing compatibility: The cushion covers needed to withstand the hotel laundry's high-temperature washing and drying cycles, with clear requirements on fabric shrinkage rates and seam strength.
- Rapid sorting identification: On-site staff sort laundered cushion covers by size and colour onto trolleys. The products required wash-resistant size labels or colour differentiation for quick manual identification.
- Compatibility with stainless steel equipment environment: The sorting area uses stainless steel worktops and trolleys. Packaging needed to avoid sharp metal components to prevent scratching equipment and linen.
Specification and solution
- Combination of three standard models: Based on the client's regular cushion dimensions, we supplied three of our standard cushion cover models, each corresponding to a different size range, avoiding the lead time and cost increases associated with customisation.
- High-density woven fabric: A high-density woven fabric selected for industrial washing durability, with shrinkage controlled within a range that does not affect subsequent fitting. Seams were reinforced with double-needle stitching.
- Independent packaging by colour and size: Each unit was folded separately by size and colour, with specification details marked on the outer packaging, allowing direct transfer to trolleys upon arrival and reducing secondary sorting on site.
Delivery and outcome
- First batch of 1,200 units delivered: A total of 1,200 units across 3 models, delivered in batches according to the client's required size and colour ratios. All items were standard catalogue products.
- Sorted onto trolleys on delivery day: After the goods arrived at the Singapore site, the client completed counting and loaded them onto trolleys the same day, with no additional ironing or finishing required.
- 20 test wash cycles with no seam failure: After the client ran 20 test wash cycles following the hotel laundry's standard procedures, spot checks showed no open seams, labels remained legible, and the fabric showed no significant deformation.
Client feedback: These cushion covers went straight onto the trolleys and saved us considerable sorting time. They also held up after more than twenty washes.
