Background

An early learning centre in Quanzhou adjusted its teaching spaces in 2016, adopting a soft colour palette, low shelving and rounded furnishings throughout. The centre needed dedicated tables and chairs for daily group activities, sized for young children and consistent with the existing interior style.

Requirements and challenges

Explicit rounded-edge safety requirement: All tabletop corners and chair back edges had to be rounded to prevent impact injuries during movement or activities, with hand inspection of every piece at acceptance.
Dimensions matched to young children's seated posture: Tabletop height and seat height were configured to the average measurements of children aged 3–6, ensuring feet could rest flat and forearms could sit naturally on the table.
Colours integrated into a light-toned environment: Main finishes used cream white with light wood grain, avoiding high-saturation colour blocks that would disrupt the room's soft visual atmosphere.

Specification and solution

Children's activity tables in group-work layout: Rectangular activity tables were selected, each with four armless small chairs arranged face-to-face in groups of four, allowing teachers to supervise by zone.
Thickened edge banding with rounded corners: All four tabletop corners were finished with thickened edge banding and rounded to a radius of no less than 20 mm, balancing durability with impact protection.
Anti-slip pads fitted to chair legs: Each chair was fitted with embedded anti-slip pads on all four feet, reducing dragging noise and lowering the risk of floor scratching.

Delivery and outcome

12 tables and 48 seats delivered on schedule: A total of 12 activity tables and 48 small chairs were delivered and installed on site, without affecting the start of term.
Passed on-site inspection first time: The centre checked every item against the three criteria of rounded corners, height and colour; all 48 seats met the agreed standard with no rework required.
No structural loosening reported after two months: A follow-up visit confirmed the tables and chairs remained stable with no edge banding cracks, and daily wipe-down maintenance proceeded normally.

Client feedback: The children sit securely, there is no worry about knocking against table corners, the classroom colours look comfortable, and teachers find it much easier to run group activities.
