Project overview

Background

A chain childcare centre operator in Hamburg carried out a safety upgrade to its indoor toddler activity areas in 2015. The room features pale timber finishes, soft floor mats and large floor-to-ceiling windows. The brief was to separate floor play zones from circulation areas while preserving the open feel of the space and maintaining clear activity boundaries for crawling and early-walking children.

Requirements and challenges

  • Zoning without blocking sightlines: The enclosures needed to create clear boundaries within an open-plan room without obstructing staff supervision of the children or reducing natural light.
  • Panel materials and edge treatment: Timber panels had to comply with EU formaldehyde emission standards for children's furniture. All accessible edges required rounding and a crack-resistant surface finish.
  • Flexible configuration: The floor plan was not a regular rectangle. Multiple panels had to be joined to suit different zone shapes, with stable connections and no accessible pinch points.

Specification and solution

  • Three standard models used in combination: Fixed panels formed the main structure, supplemented by corner connectors and single-gate access panels to cover different boundary requirements.
  • Pale timber frame with vertical rounded bars: Panel bodies were selected in a finish close to the room's existing light wood tones, allowing the enclosures to sit visually within the space rather than read as hard partitions.
  • Weighted bases and anti-slip feet: All floor-standing panels were fitted with anti-slip pads to reduce displacement when pushed or pulled by children, while protecting the soft floor mats from damage.

Delivery and outcome

  • 18 enclosure panels delivered in total, configured into 3 independent floor play zones covering approximately 55 square metres of toddler activity space.
  • Connector tensile tests passed, with maximum gaps between panels controlled to within 3 mm and no openings large enough to admit a child's finger.

Client feedback: Once the enclosures were installed, staff could see the children from any point in the room, and the activity areas became noticeably calmer and more orderly.
