Project overview
Background
The project is located in the outpatient building waiting areas of a tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, where public seating was required following a 2021 refurbishment. The waiting areas are distributed across multiple floors and department reception lobbies, with ample natural light and hard, easy-to-clean floor and wall finishes. The hospital required seating that would sit comfortably within the overall environment while withstanding the high-frequency, continuous use typical of outpatient departments.
Requirements and challenges
- Structure must be stable and allow easy floor cleaning: Waiting areas experience heavy foot traffic and seats are frequently moved or leaned on. Beam-mounted support was specified to reduce floor contact points, allowing cleaning staff to pass through and mop floor tiles without obstruction.
- Seat surface must resist dust accumulation and scratching: In an outpatient setting, seating is subject to frequent wiping and disinfection. Upholstered soft seating was not acceptable; perforated metal pans with a surface treatment were required.
- Layout must adapt to on-site zoning: Waiting areas vary in length across different sections. Row lengths had to be confirmed against actual column spacing and aisle widths to avoid blocking fire exits or disrupting patient wayfinding.
Specification and solution
- Beam-mounted metal waiting chairs selected as the primary solution: From our range of 23 metal waiting chair models, we selected a floor-beam configuration with continuous seating mounted in rows, configured at 3 to 5 seats per row depending on site length.
- Perforated steel seat pans: Both seat pans and backrests were fabricated from perforated steel sheet with an electrostatic powder-coated finish. Hole diameter and sheet thickness were specified to balance load-bearing strength with ease of cleaning.
- Lengths confirmed after on-site measurement: Installation lengths were determined according to actual wall and column positions in each outpatient waiting area, with clearance widths reserved for circulation. Floor-mounted installation was used to secure the beam support legs.
Delivery and outcome
- 128 seats delivered: Distributed across 6 waiting zones, with row lengths ranging from 3 to 5 seats, all installed to on-site measured dimensions.
- Installation was carried out in batches during non-peak outpatient hours, without disruption to consultations or patient circulation.
- Seat load testing passed: Single-seat static load testing met standard commercial waiting chair requirements, with no loosening or abnormal noise after 3 months of continuous use.
Client feedback: The seats have held up fine with twice-daily wiping by cleaning staff, the floors are much easier to mop than before, and patients waiting for their queue numbers sit comfortably and securely.
