Background
A clean pharmaceutical laboratory in Suzhou completed its interior fit-out in early 2022, with the testing areas fitted with stainless steel benching and controlled lighting systems. The operator required lab chairs for the analysis, weighing and documentation workstations. The chairs needed to sit visually in keeping with the clean environment while supporting daily disinfection wiping and prolonged seated work.
Requirements and challenges
- Explicit chemical resistance requirement: The laboratory routinely uses 75% ethanol, isopropanol and diluted sodium hypochlorite for wipe-down disinfection. Upholstery materials could not crack, discolour or delaminate.
- Height adjustment across benching and equipment: The stainless benching was set at a uniform height, but certain instrument positions required a slightly lower seat height. The adjustment range needed to serve both workstation types.
- White finish and cleanroom management: The laboratory's dominant colour is white, and the chairs needed to match. Castors and structural parts also had to avoid trapping dirt, allowing visual inspection of cleanliness.
Specification and solution
- White chemical-resistant PU upholstery: We recommended the white option from our lab chair range. The seat and backrest are one-piece moulded PU, resistant to common disinfectants, with no fabric pores to retain residue.
- Gas-lift height adjustment with footring: The adjustment range covers both benching and instrument positions. The footring is stainless steel, matching the benching material and simplifying cleaning.
- Low-resistance cleanroom castors: Castor hardness was selected to suit the epoxy flooring, avoiding surface marking while allowing easy movement for daily repositioning and zoning within the clean area.
Delivery and outcome
- 42 chairs delivered in total, covering the analysis, weighing and documentation workstations. No custom tooling beyond the standard production model was required.
- First-pass acceptance on site, with 3 chairs sampled for a 24-hour disinfectant contact test showing no visible surface change.
Client feedback: The white finish looks clean and is easy to wipe down. Height adjustment works smoothly, and staff have not reported any seating discomfort.
