Background
A corporate training centre in Osaka completed an interior renovation in 2022. The space follows a minimal design approach, with even grid ceiling lighting, light grey flooring and largely unadorned walls. The operator required seating for two training rooms that can be combined into one. The chairs needed to be visually quiet, quick to reset, and suitable for paper note-taking and light writing tasks.
Requirements and challenges
- Folding mechanism durability: The writing tablets would be folded up and down frequently. The hinges and limit structures needed to remain firm and free of noise over long-term use, with one-hand operation.
- Alignment in rows: The training rooms use fixed row spacing. The chair backs and folded tablets needed to present a consistent outer profile to avoid visual disorder, in line with the client's expectations for spatial order.
- Floor protection and noise control: The rooms have hard flooring. The chair feet needed to be slip-resistant and quiet when moved, to avoid disruption during extended training sessions.
Specification and solution
- Fold-away writing tablet configuration: We selected the compact model from our range of seven white board chairs, fitted with a right-folding PP writing tablet with a textured anti-slip surface. When folded, the tablet sits flush against the chair side without exceeding the chair width.
- Surface treatment for lighting conditions: Both the chair back and tablet surface use low-reflectance finishes. Under the even ceiling lighting, there are no noticeable glare points, helping the chairs blend into the minimal interior.
- Foot pads and stacking compatibility: The chair feet are fitted with TPE pads for slip resistance and quiet movement. Chairs in the same row can be placed at close spacing, and folded chairs support limited stacking for cleaning and room reconfiguration.
Delivery and outcome
- Quantity and delivery: A total of 126 chairs were delivered, including local logistics in Osaka and site access coordination.
- Installation accuracy: A random inspection of 30 chairs on site found tablet deployment angles between 88° and 91°, and gaps between folded tablet edges and chair sides no greater than 4 mm.
- In-use verification: Over two consecutive weeks following delivery, the chairs were used across 12 training sessions. The operator reported no service requests related to loose tablets, noise or row misalignment.
Client feedback: The chairs suit the rooms well. They fold back neatly after use, and after several weeks there has been nothing needing adjustment.
