Background
A rooftop cocktail bar in central Manchester completed a terrace renovation in spring 2024. Overlooking the city skyline, the venue operates primarily from dusk into the evening. The bar required 48 high-seat stools suited to the terrace atmosphere: visually light, weather-stable, and compatible with warm-toned night lighting.
Requirements and challenges
- Tight dimensional constraints: The terrace bar counter stands at 1,100 mm, requiring a 760 mm seat height. Leg spacing had to allow unobstructed access to the drainage channel inspection hatch beneath the counter.
- Weather resistance and corrosion protection: Manchester's wet, humid climate meant the black steel frames had to pass a 96-hour neutral salt spray test, with powder coat adhesion meeting grade 0 under the cross-cut test.
- Visual and lighting compatibility: The stools needed to avoid glare under warm yellow lighting, with seat colour kept within a close tolerance range to the walnut-veneer bar counter panels.
Specification and solution
- Slim black powder-coated steel frames: 22 mm tube diameter for a lightweight visual profile, finished in matte black sand texture to minimise highlight reflection under night lighting.
- Walnut-grain transfer-printed aluminium seats: More resistant to outdoor temperature and humidity fluctuations than solid wood. Drainage holes on the underside prevent water pooling, while the grain and colour align with the bar counter panels.
- TPE foot glides with embedded stainless steel washers: Provide slip resistance on terrace tiles and long-term wear tolerance, with quiet movement to reduce dragging noise during evening service.
Delivery and outcome
- 48 bar stools delivered in two batches.
- All units passed the 96-hour neutral salt spray test, with coating adhesion at cross-cut grade 0.
- Post-installation inspection of 12 units for load and tilt testing: static load capacity of 160 kg per stool, with no displacement at an unloaded tilt angle of 15 degrees.
- A clear operating clearance of 210 mm was retained at the drainage channel inspection hatch beneath the counter, allowing routine maintenance without moving the stools.
Client feedback: The stools sit lightly on the terrace, with no glare under the evening lights. After rain, the seats show no water marks, and guests find them stable when seated.
