Projektübersicht

Background

The project is located at an overwater resort lounge in the Maldives, where timber decks are built directly over a shallow lagoon, surrounded by open sea and sky. In early 2023, the operator carried out a furniture refresh for the waterfront seating area, replacing existing outdoor seating to withstand the high-humidity, high-salinity and strong-UV marine environment while maintaining the resort's natural, relaxed character.

Requirements and challenges

  • Salt-spray and UV resistance: Furniture is exposed to sea wind and direct sunlight year-round. Rattan material and metal connectors must offer long-term corrosion resistance and resistance to ageing.
  • Structural stability in wet conditions: Humidity fluctuates widely across the timber deck waterfront area. Chair frames must not warp or loosen through moisture absorption; connection details need to allow for drainage and ventilation.
  • Quick-drying and replaceable upholstery: Cushions need to drain and dry quickly after rain showers. Covers must be removable for washing, and internal filling must not retain water over time, which would cause odour or mildew.

Specification and solution

  • Two hand-woven rattan chair models selected: From the seven rattan chairs in our online range, two low-back lounge models were chosen. Both feature a dense weave, suit semi-reclined seating, and are proportioned for individual placement along the timber deck.
  • Salt-spray treatment on frames: Internal metal frames received a corrosion-resistant coating. Rattan poles were selected from treated outdoor-grade material, and all connectors used rust-resistant hardware.
  • Quick-drain cushion construction: High-resilience foam is wrapped in a waterproof, breathable inner liner. Outer covers use removable, washable outdoor fabric, and the base includes drainage eyelets to prevent rainwater retention.

Delivery and outcome

  • Quantity: Two rattan chair models were delivered, 18 pieces in total.
  • Salt-spray testing: Metal connectors passed a 96-hour neutral salt-spray test. Rattan surfaces showed no visible fading or embrittlement.
  • On-site drainage verification: Cushions returned to a dry surface approximately 25 minutes after a manual water-spray test, with no internal water retention or deformation.

Client feedback: The rattan chairs sit well on the timber deck. They showed no loosening even in strong sea winds, and the cushions dried quickly after rain.
