Background
This is a family-style restaurant in central Valencia, Spain, with light-coloured tiled flooring and warm solid timber tables, serving primarily family customers. In early 2016 the restaurant supplemented its dining-area furniture and needed children's chairs at family tables, placed alongside adult seating while maintaining overall visual consistency.
Requirements and challenges
- Seat height matched to adult dining positions: The children's chair seat height needed to correspond with the existing adult seating and table height, so that children would not face an unsuitable table height once seated.
- Non-slip performance on tile: The restaurant floor is tiled, so the chair legs required sufficient friction to prevent sliding when children sat down or stood up, while also allowing daily movement without scratching the floor.
- Easy cleaning and durability: The restaurant has a high table turnover rate, and children's dining commonly produces food residue and liquid spills. The seat surface needed to resist staining, wipe clean easily, and withstand high-frequency commercial use.
Specification and solution
- One-piece polypropylene seat shell: A polypropylene seat body was selected, with a smooth surface and no seams. Sauce, drinks and other stains can be removed with a damp cloth, matching the restaurant's fast cleaning routine.
- Timber legs with anti-slip pads: The chair legs use light-coloured timber similar to the restaurant's solid wood tables, with rubber anti-slip pads fitted underneath. The chairs remain stable on tile and produce no noticeable noise when moved.
- Narrowed down from 23 existing models: Based on three criteria — seat height, load capacity and leg material — one model was selected from 23 in-stock children's chairs. No non-standard modifications were made, reducing procurement cost and ensuring the delivery schedule.
Delivery and outcome
- 80 children's chairs delivered: The chairs were distributed across more than 20 family tables in the restaurant, placed at a 1:2 ratio with adult seating and covering the main dining areas.
- Passed 60 kg static load test: Sampled chairs were tested under commercial standards for static load, showing no deformation or cracking, providing sufficient margin for normal child use and occasional standing.
Client feedback: The chairs fit in well with the restaurant's overall look. Children sit steadily, cleaning is straightforward, and after several weeks there have been no issues with loose legs.
